Honey & Bees
Sweet honey and essential pollination from our carefully managed apiaries
Our Apiary
Our honey bee operation is a vital element of Elements Farm and Brewery, providing both delicious honey products and essential pollination services for our crops and the surrounding ecosystem.
We maintain several apiaries strategically placed throughout our property to maximize pollination benefits while ensuring our bees have access to diverse forage throughout the growing season. From spring wildflowers to summer clover and fall goldenrod, our bees produce honey with complex, seasonal flavors.
This element of our farm is managed primarily by Michael, our 13-year-old son, under the guidance of his parents. Michael has developed a special connection with the bees and is implementing innovative monitoring systems to track hive health.

Our Honey Products

Raw Honey
Our pure, unfiltered raw honey is available in seasonal varieties, each with distinct flavor profiles reflecting the flowers in bloom. We minimally process our honey to preserve its natural enzymes and beneficial properties.
Infused Honey
We create specialty honeys infused with herbs from our garden, including lavender honey, cinnamon honey, and hot honey with our own chili peppers. Perfect for culinary adventures or as unique gifts.

Beeswax Products
We utilize every gift from our bees, crafting natural beeswax candles, food wraps, and moisturizing balms. These sustainable alternatives to synthetic products are handmade on our farm.
Our Beekeeping Approach
Sustainable Practices
We practice natural beekeeping methods that prioritize bee health over maximum honey production. This includes allowing our bees to keep enough of their honey to thrive through winter rather than replacing it with sugar syrup.
We avoid chemical treatments whenever possible, instead using integrated pest management strategies and selecting for naturally resilient bee genetics. Our goal is to develop locally adapted bee colonies that can withstand Vermont's climate and resist common pests and diseases.

Pollinator Habitat
We've dedicated portions of our farm to pollinator-friendly habitat, with diverse wildflower plantings that provide nectar and pollen throughout the growing season. These areas support not only our honey bees but also native bee species and other beneficial insects.
Our no-spray policy throughout the farm ensures that pollinators have access to clean forage, free from harmful pesticides and herbicides. This approach benefits the entire farm ecosystem while producing exceptional honey.
Technology & Innovation
Led by Michael's interest in technology, we're implementing innovative monitoring systems for our hives. Using temperature and humidity sensors, hive scales, and sound monitoring, we can track colony health and activity without disturbing the bees.
This data helps us make informed management decisions and detect potential issues early. It's also providing valuable insights for Michael's ongoing research into bee behavior and colony health indicators.

Benefits Beyond Honey
Our bees contribute to the farm in many ways beyond producing honey and beeswax:
Crop Pollination
Bees pollinate our vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and berry bushes, significantly increasing yields and improving fruit quality.
Ecosystem Support
By maintaining healthy pollinator populations, we support the entire local ecosystem, including wildlife that depends on flowering plants.
Brewery Ingredients
Our honey is used in several of our planned brewery recipes, creating unique farmhouse ales and meads that showcase our terroir.
Educational Value
Our apiary provides valuable learning opportunities for our children and will eventually be part of our farm tours and educational programs.
